Creatine is an amino acid that naturally occurs in the body. Whilst we acquire most of our creatine through diet, as a supplement it has added benefits to training. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is what releases energy in the body, when it releases energy, it is converted into adenosine diphosphate (ADP). The role that creatine phosphate (CP) plays in this is to reverse this reaction, essentially recharging your batteries. This is why you will feel that you have more energy to train longer on creatine. Because it aids energy production, creatine in turn aids the process of muscle building. It does this firstly by allowing you to train longer and harder, meaning that more protein synthesis will occur, and secondly, it causes the volumisation of muscle with water which deters the breakdown of protein.

Whey protein powder is highly concentrated protein obtained from cows’ milk, and is vital in the process of muscle building. Taking a whey protein powder supplement will directly increase the speed of protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is the process in which muscle fibres regenerate, and thus is the time when muscle is built.
Protein supplements have been tried and tested over the years, the most important factor being that you find a suitable manner of using protein that fits in with your workout regime. There are a number of different protein powders on the market, that differ slightly from whey, such as soy or casein, that can be suitable for those with specialist dietary requirements.
What’s the Verdict?
I would argue that whilst most people would put these two products up against each other, really they can’t be compared. Whilst creatine monohydrate provides the energy and the stamina behind your workout, whey protein enables the process of muscle growth to be enhanced. Both offer very different benefits that can be applied to different goals. Many trainers will use both and tailor make a supplement plan that best suits their workout and aims.
